West Highland Way

Everything you need to know when planning the West Highland Way

The West Highland Way is one of the most beautiful walking routes in the world. Covering 96 miles through some of Scotlands breathtaking locations.

This breaks down how you should organise and prepare yourself for the West Highland Way.

Training:

Most people can complete the west highland way but most people also underestimate it.
By making sure you tick off these steps you will not only complete it. But you will really enjoy it !

Things you should organise/consider before attempting the walk.

Are you going to organise it yourself or have a company organise it for you ?
Here are some of the best companies. Some of which offer self guided and guided packages.

Pick your number of days depending on fitness levels. I would strongly recommend doing it the first time over a solid 7 days / 6 Nights. This way you will know for future if you need more or less days. Remember you are here to have fun and not feel miserable πŸ™‚

Baggage Transfer:Β
Most people do attempt the walk without using the bag service. Big mistake. Not only are you increasing your chance of injury but you’re taking away maximum enjoyment.

People usually phone and book the bag transfer after day one.
Sometimes they are already injured 😞

The best thing to do is sort it all out before you head off. It will be the best money you spend all holiday.

How does Baggage Freedom work ?
Meet them at Milngavie train station on the morning you start. Your bags will be tagged up.
Simply have your bags ready for collection each morning before 9am.
Bags should weigh no more than 20kg. You can add extra bags in the morning if needed.
Baggage Freedom will also return transport you back to Milngavie/Glasgow/Edinburgh.
Cheaper and faster than train… Brilliant !!

After you have planned your Dates/Route/Accommodation/Baggage Freedom.
You are very much good to go

All that’s left now is to pack your items

In Scotland we can have 4 seasons in a day so its important to be prepared.
Waterpoofs / warm clothing / thermals

Important items that will make your life so much better.
Compeed for blisters and Smidge for keeping those nasty wee midges away

Eating and drinking
You will always find places for food and drinks every day.
No need to carry 30 cans of soup everywhere with you…
But take a few to enjoy while looking over a view πŸ˜‰

GOOD LUCK TO ALL ON THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY!
